Top Ten most sought after high balls - if you dare!
The appeal of high-ball bouldering is all about the reward, the greater the commitment required equates to a greater reward. Therefore in order for this list to be legit, the problems must be true blue high-balls, still cruxing after 20ft. Many boulder broblems are hard down low but with high easy top-outs, this doesn't fall under true blue high-balls definition. Now we must be carefull to not include free-solos, the cruxing must be done before 30ft!! Anything past 30ft is clearly in the no fall zone, this equals major injuries and death! Here is a chart explaining the rate of an average human fall.
10ft = 17 mph
15ft = 21 mph
20ft = 25 mph
25ft = 27 mph
30ft = 30 mph
40ft = 35 mph
50ft = 38 mph
It should be noted that a human landing with a standard parachute hits the ground at a rate of 14 miles per hour, this is clearly safe. It is also crucial to note that a free falling human from 20 ft has doubled the speed from that of a 10ft fall, this is entering the high-ball zone. At 30ft = 30 miles per hour = if you fall, you are screwed! And to reach terminal velocity for the average human, you would have to fall for about 12 seconds and you would cover the height of the Verdon Gorge at 1,200 ft reaching a top speed when you splat at the bottom of 125 miles per hour. Not to freak anybody out about high-balls, but if you are going to get into the game you better be well calculated and informed.
Lets figure out when this craze all started. When I started climbing in 1992 boulder broblems just weren't all that tall, however with better and bigger pad development we where able to push the envelope a lot more. I saw a major pad change around the turn of the century. So lets look back to the birth of high-balling to find that turning point. Only one clearly stands out in my mind that has defined the sport, in 2002 Jason Kehl set the standard with his brilliant Evilution at v12. This awe inspiring ascent triggerd the minds and ideas of what is possible in the future. I will need everybody's help to create this list.
1. Evilution V12 - Jason Kehl - the first to venture onto the upper headwall of this boulder problem back in 2002. Evilution has set the standard of the high-ball!
2. The Beautiful and the Damned V13 - Jorgeson grabbed the FA of the 30 foot Bardini Boulder problem The Beautiful and Damned v13 early 2007
